Woman leaves friend stunned by her “selfish” financial request: “This plan is insane”
A woman refuses to co-sign her friend’s mortgage.
She shared the issue on Reddit “Am I the A ******?” (IATA) ”. Her friend can only get a house with a co-signer. But the Reddit poster doesn’t feel comfortable as it’s looking to buy a house itself. The problem is, their mutual friends think the Reddit poster has a responsibility to co-sign.
“My good friend is currently looking for a home,” the Reddit poster wrote. “I come from a fairly wealthy family, unlike my friend. My job also pays a decent amount more than his. My friend has been trying to buy a house for a year and a half, and although her credit rating is great, she is not making enough money from her job to qualify for a mortgage without a co-signer.
“She has suggested to me several times that I should co-sign a mortgage for her. I’m pretty much her only option for this since neither her parents nor any of her other friends are in a position to financially be able to help her. The thing is that I really I don’t want to co-sign for her.
The Reddit poster just doesn’t feel comfortable co-signing the mortgage for several reasons.
“I’m working on buying my own home in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world,” the Reddit poster explained. “My friend gave me a guarantee that she wouldn’t default on the mortgage, but honestly, I don’t see how she can make a promise like that. She didn’t even really ask me. She just said it was what she needed and expected me to accept it.
“Most of our mutual friends who know this situation are on her side and think it would be cruel not to co-sign for her. Some of them even tried to be her co-signer, but were rejected by the bank for various reasons. (eg not making enough money, bad credit scores etc.) It kind of made me wonder if I am being unreasonable and selfish.
The editors thought the friend was asking too much.
“This plan is crazy. Don’t do it, ”one user commented.
“Don’t co-sign for her. It’s not selfish to say no, ”wrote another.
“Your friends are overwhelmingly entitled,” someone added.
